UMBC imProveit
(Fall 2009 – Spring 2010)
Goal:
To counter solar heat gain in the UMBC Commons and to alleviate stress on the HVAC system by installing shades on the building’s south facing windows.
The UMBC imProveit competition is an SGA sponsored event created to encourage the improvement of the UMBC campus. With a budget of $30,000 competitors are asked to propose pragmatic and novel ideas, and to implement them. After narrowing down the finalists, in the spring semester of 2010, students of the campus will then vote for the best project.
We are currently working with the Commons administration to push forward with our proposal to reduce energy consumption in the Commons. The solar gain on the large south facing windows adds a tremendous and significant stress to the HVAC system, all of which equate to wasted energy. We believe that by consistently pursuing methods of energy reduction for the school, we help the long term durability, environmental and economic costs of operating buildings on campus.
